Future Historians

Future Historians

The Future Historians project is a new collaborative initiative for secondary schools in Crumlin and other local areas, led by Dublin City Council, historian Cathy Scuffil, and the Crumlin & Walkinstown History Group. Building on last year’s successful pilot at Rosary College—where students’ projects were exhibited in Crumlin Village—this project invites students of Rosary College, Loreto College and Clogher Road Community College to explore Crumlin and the surrounding areas’ rich history and create an original research poster to share with the community.

  • Participating Schools: Rosary College, Loreto College, Clogher Road Community College
  • Submission Deadline: 11th April 2025
  • Exhibition: Friday Mary 2nd 10am – 1pm Student posters will be displayed in a public exhibition before the end of the school year, celebrating the future historians’ work.

Project Guidelines

Students can choose a topic of historical interest within the general locality, such as a person, landmark, event, monument, building, or even a local or family story. Each student will create an A0-sized poster, using their own research and ideas to convey their findings clearly and creatively. Posters should be easy to read and designed to engage the community, ensuring viewers can appreciate the local area’s heritage at a glance.

Originality is essential: all projects should be the students’ own work, reflecting their unique perspectives and discoveries. We will provide materials to help students create polished, professional posters.

Teacher Support

Cathy Scuffil, a renowned local historian, will offer support to teachers to guide students particularly in the research process. Teachers can reach out for advice on easily available resources or historical insights to help students with their topics, ensuring they approach their work with confidence and accuracy.

Poster Creation

Students should use Canva directly to create their posters. There are many templates that can be modified or students can create their own.

Some tips:

  • Ensure the the size of the document is set to A0 size (841mm wide x 1189mm tall ) when it is being created.
  • Photos used should be high resolution. Low resolution photos look okay on screen but we printed in large format it will be pixelated. Usually the larger the file size the higher the resolution.
  • Make sure you add the connection to the local area to your project.
  • It is important to make sure the text is easy to read. Please ensure the contrast between the text colour and background colour behind it is high, so the text is easy to read.

Project Goals

The Future Historians project is a unique chance for students to engage with local areas past, developing both research skills and pride in their community. Through their original posters, students will bring local stories to life, offering the community an opportunity to see Crumlin’s history through fresh, young eyes.
