Renowned playwright Brendan Behan was found unconscious with serious head injuries on Old Clogher Road, off Sundrive Road, on Dece 30th. A passer-by discovered Behan lying in a pool of blood and alerted emergency services. He was rushed to the Meath Hospital, where he received eight stitches for a severe head wound.
Gardaí are investigating the incident, uncertain whether Behan’s injuries resulted from a fall or a potential hit-and-run accident. Witnesses reported seeing a car with headlights on near the scene, though its involvement remains unclear.
Behan, a well-known figure in Crumlin, had recently been treated for diabetes at the Royal City of Dublin Hospital. His condition initially remained critical, with concerns about pneumonia. However, Behan regained consciousness and showed signs of improvement.
After two weeks of recovery, Behan was discharged from the Meath Hospital on January 12, 1964. The Garda investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing.
