Despatch Rider Shot - Attack on Crumlin Road

DESPATCH RIDER SHOT ATTACK ON CRUMLIN ROAD
The following official statement was issued from the Publicity Dept., G.H.Q , Beggar’s Bush, last night.
“To-night a motor despatch rider in uniform from Beggar’s Bush was fired on at the Half-way House, Crumlin Rd. Two lorries containing a number of men in ordinary attire were drawn across the road and the cyclist had to ride in the grass margin. When passing the lorry the cyclist was fired on three times and seriously wounded.
The fire was deliberate, at point blank range, and no order was given to halt. He managed to get through, but collapsed a short distance further on, where he was picked up by tho local people, who notified G.H.Q. An ambulance was sent for, and he was brought to Mercer’s Hospital, where he now lies ill in a precarious condition.” An “Irish Independent” representative was informed at the hospital this morning that hé was progressing favourably. His name is Bermingham.
