Plea for more local halls in Dublin

November 29, 1939

The provision by the Corporation of local halls or community centres in the newly built-up areas in Dublin was urged by a deputation from the Dublin Constituencies Council of the Labour Party received by the City Manager yesterday. The deputation consisted of Councillor M. O’Sullivan, Councillor J. McCabe, and Messrs. Frank Robbins and Thomas O’Reilly. Stating that this amenity was long overdue, the deputation submitted a plan of a hall and stage, 27 feet by 73 feet, to seat 300 people, and capable of being partitioned for use by debating societies, etc. The cost’ would be £1,500. The following ¦ sites were suggested for. such halls:—Cabra (junction St. Attracta and Quarry Road); Kimmage (Sundrive Road); Crumlin (Sundrive Road); Walsh Road (Walsh Road Park); Ellenfield (Ellenfield Park); Donnycarney (junction Malahide Road and Collins Avenue); Fairview (junction Howth Road and Malahide Road); Inchicore (Emmet Road, beside Library).

. Mr. ‘Robbins told an Irish press reporter afterwards that the Council suggested that the halls should not be let on at least two days and nights of the week, but should be completely at the disposal of the residents. Ho added that the City Manager was very interested in their proposals, and promised to give them special consideration.
